Camp Lunar

My kids are pretty creative and imaginative.  I love this about them.  As I type these words I can hear the three of them playing make believe that they are travelling the world on a hot air balloon, airplane and ship.  Because they have so many creative ideas I have mom guilt about not indulging their every whim.  I try to say "yes" to as much as possible, but I still say "no" plenty.

Sometime back in March or April Via made a poster for something called Camp Lunar and posted it in our dining room.  Of course it was a cute idea, but I don't think any of us thought it would happen.  Because these are exactly the types of ideas that don't usually happen.

After staring at this poster at every dinner for months I thought, "Why not do a version of this camp?  Why not just take an hour a day for one week and invite our friends over for Camp Lunar?"  So I reached out to the families on the street and they were all down to let their kids participate.  We modified the plan just a little bit and dropped off flyers.

Every day we did a quick welcome to Camp Lunar in front of the garage, and then went in the house for our daily "kick-off."  On the first day our big activity was tie dyeing t-shirts.  I had never tie dyed before, but it was so fun.  Now that I have done it once I want to do it again without also helping 7 kids at the same time.  Ha!

On the second day we did a nature theme.  For our welcome meeting we did "Going on a Bear Hunt" together.  Via had gotten journals for everyone and then drew pictures of different nature items and each kid found everything during the park scavenger hunt.  We had fun being outside together on a not-too-hot day.  For snack we had trail mix.

Day three was a first aide theme and also movie-making day.  We sang "Head and Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" for our welcome song.  Then Via had written a script for a movie and spent time shooting that movie.  We also talked about where we had gotten hurt before and then put Band-Aids in those spots.  We might have gotten a little carried away with the Band-Aids.  Popsicles were the perfect snack, because they always make you feel better.

Day four was dubbed "creative day."  We started out with "The Tooty Ta Song" and it was absolutely hilarious to watch the kids do this one.  After that we went over to the park and practiced signing a Camp Lunar song that Via wrote.  We played with model clay, and we made sculptures and structures with un-cooked spaghetti noodles and marshmallows.

Day five we wrapped up with all the families coming over for pizza and movie night.  We had planned to read a Mulan book and then watch Mulan, but then all the kids decided to watch a different movie instead.  We wore our tie dye shirts, sang the Camp Lunar song, and debuted the movie the kids made.  It was a great way to finish the week.

Moon Palace Cancun Nizuc - 5 Things I LOVED, and 3 Things I didn't

All-Inclusive vacations may not be everyone's cup of tea, but over the past 6 years I have developed an appreciation (addiction) for taking a vacation where I don't really have to think much.  Between the demands of marriage, parenting, career, housework, and kids activities, it is really nice to pay a sum of money for your vacation and then just......enjoy!  Many all-inclusive resorts include more than just food and beverage.  There is often entertainment, activities, childcare, fitness classes, and plenty to keep you busy without leaving the property or spending additional money.  If you like, you can also book excursions or explore the local area at an extra expense.  We have rarely opted to do anything extra as we are typically happy to take advantage of the included options.   Listen, in my experience, you get what you pay for with, well, almost everything.  And that goes for all-inclusive resorts.  We have gone low-end, mid-range, and h...

Our Creator is not a Careless Mechanic

On Friday, November 2, Justin and I headed to our 41 week and 1 day checkup.  I had been having consistently inconsistent contractions for days, but.......Still.No.Baby.  My doctor wanted to monitor me and Via for half an hour and was looking for us to score 10 out of 10 points.  After half an hour of monitoring us she only found 6 points - also my blood pressure was much higher than it had been during the rest of my pregnancy.  Justin and I listened as she explained that the placenta may not be doing the best job for the baby anymore.  She looked at me and said, "If you were the type of mom that was planning to have an epidural, then I'd say let's go to the hospital, put you on pitocin, and have this baby."  She went on to say that since we favored a drug-free approach we had two options: 1.  Go to the hospital and be monitored for 24 hours to see if we could make up the 4 points we were missing.  If all looked good, then we could go ...

Sun Palace - July 2022

We are on our way home from our 6th Annual Away and it occurred to me that I take the fewest pictures on these trips. I don’t use or look at my phone very much because I like to unplug as much as possible and do “perfect day” activities. That means fewer pictures, but usually more enjoyment.  I think it’s a fun game to explore what would make up an individual’s perfect day. Once you have figured out what a perfect day looks like you can incorporate those types of moments and activities into more of your regular days. For example, my perfect day consists of going for a walk and seeing the beach. I can’t do a beach walk every day, but almost any day I can go for a regular walk and enjoy fresh air and a mental reset. I can create a “perfect day moment.” I have had a lot of perfect day moments the last 5 days and 4 nights at Sun Palace, but notably missing was time with my kids. Therefore, I can’t wait to get home! We arrived to Sun Palace on a Wednesday. Our good friends had been ther...
