Soren's 2 Month Update/Trip to California

Well, I didn't blog on July 21st as I intended, but there is a very good reason for that.  On Sunday, July 21, the Justin Mederich's embarked on a 6 day trip to California to visit Justin's grandparents on his mom's side.  This entry will serve as both an update on Soren's 2 months of life, as well as some pictures from our trip out west.

So, what is Soren up to these days?  He's becoming very engaged with the world around him.  He looks around and follows things with his eyes.  He smiles a bunch and tonight after his bath time he even laughed a little bit. So stinkin' cute!!  He's been eating well and nurses about 9 times a day.  I'm so happy to have been able to stay home longer with Soren and establish our nursing relationship for longer before returning to work.  Sleep has been good too.  Last night he even slept for a 9 hour stretch!  That certainly isn't the norm (yet), but I'll enjoy it when it happens.  Hooray for sleep!  It sure makes going back to work much easier when I'm feeling well rested on most days.  Speaking of work, I go back this coming Monday and I find that so hard to believe.  Staying home has been wonderful, if not a little bit challenging.  I know that my kiddos are in the best hands with their daddy, and that makes the transition back to work as ideal as possible.  Oh, I should add that at Soren's 2 month check up he was 11 lbs 10 oz and 23 inches long.  I can't remember his head circumference at the moment, but it was (not surprisingly) in the 90th percentile.

On to our California vacation.  Nana and Papa live near San Diego, and the whole family has been planning a trip out there to celebrate Nana's 75th birthday.  Justin and I weren't planning on going as we were nervous about how it would be to travel with a toddler and a newborn.  About a month ago we received news that Papa was having some pretty major health concerns.  This news made it easy for us to change our mind about going.  We wanted to spend quality time with Nana and Papa and show off our newest little baby.

A few pictures from the trip.

Both kids were great on the plane.  We let Via watch an excessive amount of her favorite TV show before she crashed with Daddy, and Soren basically nursed the whole time.

Waiting to get into the Temecula Children's Museum.

Via loved the museum.  She would have spent all her time in the Inventor's chair with the black lights and she was especially fond of the smiley face on her right hand.

Hanging in the hotel room with Daddy.

 Selfie with Mommy.

The Mederich kids taking surfing lessons on our beach day.  They totally rocked it.

Beach babes.  Via kept eating sand.....

Soren was totally crashed.  I think he loved the sound of the ocean.

Hanging with Grandma.  Don't mind my finger...oops!

The busy days wore Via out.  She fell asleep in the car a lot, even on short drives.  Such a precious little lady.

Kiddos hanging at the hotel.

Because, who doesn't love a sleeping baby?

Can't visit wine country without visiting at least one winery.

And finally, the whole purpose of our trip.  Time with these folks!  We loved seeing Nana and Papa and enjoyed lots of good food and conversation with them.

Moon Palace Cancun Nizuc - 5 Things I LOVED, and 3 Things I didn't

All-Inclusive vacations may not be everyone's cup of tea, but over the past 6 years I have developed an appreciation (addiction) for taking a vacation where I don't really have to think much.  Between the demands of marriage, parenting, career, housework, and kids activities, it is really nice to pay a sum of money for your vacation and then just......enjoy!  Many all-inclusive resorts include more than just food and beverage.  There is often entertainment, activities, childcare, fitness classes, and plenty to keep you busy without leaving the property or spending additional money.  If you like, you can also book excursions or explore the local area at an extra expense.  We have rarely opted to do anything extra as we are typically happy to take advantage of the included options.   Listen, in my experience, you get what you pay for with, well, almost everything.  And that goes for all-inclusive resorts.  We have gone low-end, mid-range, and h...

Our Creator is not a Careless Mechanic

On Friday, November 2, Justin and I headed to our 41 week and 1 day checkup.  I had been having consistently inconsistent contractions for days, but.......Still.No.Baby.  My doctor wanted to monitor me and Via for half an hour and was looking for us to score 10 out of 10 points.  After half an hour of monitoring us she only found 6 points - also my blood pressure was much higher than it had been during the rest of my pregnancy.  Justin and I listened as she explained that the placenta may not be doing the best job for the baby anymore.  She looked at me and said, "If you were the type of mom that was planning to have an epidural, then I'd say let's go to the hospital, put you on pitocin, and have this baby."  She went on to say that since we favored a drug-free approach we had two options: 1.  Go to the hospital and be monitored for 24 hours to see if we could make up the 4 points we were missing.  If all looked good, then we could go ...

Sun Palace - July 2022

We are on our way home from our 6th Annual Away and it occurred to me that I take the fewest pictures on these trips. I don’t use or look at my phone very much because I like to unplug as much as possible and do “perfect day” activities. That means fewer pictures, but usually more enjoyment.  I think it’s a fun game to explore what would make up an individual’s perfect day. Once you have figured out what a perfect day looks like you can incorporate those types of moments and activities into more of your regular days. For example, my perfect day consists of going for a walk and seeing the beach. I can’t do a beach walk every day, but almost any day I can go for a regular walk and enjoy fresh air and a mental reset. I can create a “perfect day moment.” I have had a lot of perfect day moments the last 5 days and 4 nights at Sun Palace, but notably missing was time with my kids. Therefore, I can’t wait to get home! We arrived to Sun Palace on a Wednesday. Our good friends had been ther...
