21 Months Young

Via girl was 21 months yesterday.  Here's the happenings.....

After we returned from our California trip Via was excessively moody and whiny.  It was terrible.  Like, she wanted to be held all the time and would scream and cry if we weren't "nuggling" her.  As I mentioned in my previous post, when we were out of town, and especially on the airplane, we allowed her to watch a lot of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.  It occurred to us that perhaps the excessive amount of media had gotten to her.  When we first introduced TV we did one show a day while I got dinner ready and Justin picked up the house.  After Soren was born we went to two shows a day.  One to keep her quiet when she first woke up and then the pre-dinner show as well.  In an effort to try to reclaim our sweet girl we decided to give Daniel Tiger a little break.  I can't tell you what a difference it has made!  Like seriously.  TV is the devil and Via can never watch it ever ever ever again.  Yes, I'm being a little dramatic, but I'm incredibly blown away by how her behaviour returned to "normal" and is perhaps better than it has ever been!  Except yesterday in the nursery at church....oh well, sometimes you really do just want to snuggle with mama.  :)

So what else has she been up to recently?  She's in a tutu phase which is pretty adorable.  Her favorite song to sing is "Holy, Holy, Holy," and she is always asking us to sing it with her.  For a while we have been teaching her to pray at the dinner table.  We say a short sentence and have her repeat it.  Something to the effect of, "Thank you, Jesus.  For this food.  I love you.  Amen."  A week or two ago she took the driver wheel mid-prayer and said some words we recognized and some words we didn't and then, "Amen."  It was pretty cute.  I pray that she is always eager to pray, sing hymns, and read the Bible (one of her favorite books).

Her newest trick?  Grandpa Rich taught her how to somersault.  Action shot!

Moon Palace Cancun Nizuc - 5 Things I LOVED, and 3 Things I didn't

All-Inclusive vacations may not be everyone's cup of tea, but over the past 6 years I have developed an appreciation (addiction) for taking a vacation where I don't really have to think much.  Between the demands of marriage, parenting, career, housework, and kids activities, it is really nice to pay a sum of money for your vacation and then just......enjoy!  Many all-inclusive resorts include more than just food and beverage.  There is often entertainment, activities, childcare, fitness classes, and plenty to keep you busy without leaving the property or spending additional money.  If you like, you can also book excursions or explore the local area at an extra expense.  We have rarely opted to do anything extra as we are typically happy to take advantage of the included options.   Listen, in my experience, you get what you pay for with, well, almost everything.  And that goes for all-inclusive resorts.  We have gone low-end, mid-range, and h...

Our Creator is not a Careless Mechanic

On Friday, November 2, Justin and I headed to our 41 week and 1 day checkup.  I had been having consistently inconsistent contractions for days, but.......Still.No.Baby.  My doctor wanted to monitor me and Via for half an hour and was looking for us to score 10 out of 10 points.  After half an hour of monitoring us she only found 6 points - also my blood pressure was much higher than it had been during the rest of my pregnancy.  Justin and I listened as she explained that the placenta may not be doing the best job for the baby anymore.  She looked at me and said, "If you were the type of mom that was planning to have an epidural, then I'd say let's go to the hospital, put you on pitocin, and have this baby."  She went on to say that since we favored a drug-free approach we had two options: 1.  Go to the hospital and be monitored for 24 hours to see if we could make up the 4 points we were missing.  If all looked good, then we could go ...

Sun Palace - July 2022

We are on our way home from our 6th Annual Away and it occurred to me that I take the fewest pictures on these trips. I don’t use or look at my phone very much because I like to unplug as much as possible and do “perfect day” activities. That means fewer pictures, but usually more enjoyment.  I think it’s a fun game to explore what would make up an individual’s perfect day. Once you have figured out what a perfect day looks like you can incorporate those types of moments and activities into more of your regular days. For example, my perfect day consists of going for a walk and seeing the beach. I can’t do a beach walk every day, but almost any day I can go for a regular walk and enjoy fresh air and a mental reset. I can create a “perfect day moment.” I have had a lot of perfect day moments the last 5 days and 4 nights at Sun Palace, but notably missing was time with my kids. Therefore, I can’t wait to get home! We arrived to Sun Palace on a Wednesday. Our good friends had been ther...
